About me
Driven by a lifelong passion for both the intricate beauty of nature and the power of precise language, I am Sarie Van Belle, a zoologist, writer, and scientific editor dedicated to helping you communicate your natural science research with clarity and impact. My deep understanding of the scientific process, combined with a meticulous approach to language, makes me a unique partner in bringing your work to a global audience.

My credentials include a Ph.D. in Zoology from the esteemed University of Wisconsin–Madison, where my research focused on the fascinating realms of animal behavior and primatology. For the past two decades, my commitment to ecological understanding has led me to spearhead an independent research program on the ecology and social dynamics of wild black howler monkeys in southeastern Mexico. This extensive firsthand research experience provides me with an insider's perspective on the nuances and critical terminology within your field.

As a researcher, I've come to recognize the transformative power of clear, precise, and impactful writing. My track record speaks for itself, with over 50 scientific articles published, 29 as first author. Furthermore, my ability to articulate compelling research narratives has resulted in securing over MEX$ 2,300,000 (approximately US$110,000) in research funding. This experience in crafting successful scientific communication ensures that I understand the critical elements for effective writing in your discipline. I have also had the privilege of guiding numerous undergraduate and graduate students in refining their academic writing, fostering their ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
Over the years, I've honed the skill of transforming intricate scientific concepts into accessible and engaging narratives tailored to specialized audiences. This ability to bridge the gap between complex data and clear communication is at the heart of ECOLingua Editing's mission.
Born and raised in Belgium, my native language is Dutch. My academic journey, including six formative years living and studying in the United States, allowed me to achieve fluency in English. Today, I operate comfortably at a professional English level, possessing a strong command of grammar, syntax, and spelling – essential for ensuring the highest quality editing and translation.
Based in Mexico for the past 15 years, I have also become fluent in Spanish. My immersion in the local scientific community provides me with a valuable understanding of the linguistic nuances and cultural context relevant to researchers and institutions across Latin America. While I continue to refine my formal Spanish writing skills, this deep understanding allows me to provide insightful editing and translation services tailored to the region.
While research remains a core part of my identity, I've discovered a profound satisfaction in facilitating effective science communication. My current project, writing a book in Spanish for local communities about the fascinating lives of black howler monkeys, reflects this passion. Through ECOLingua Editing, I aim to leverage my unique blend of scientific expertise and linguistic proficiency to empower you to bring your crucial natural science research to life, ensuring it reaches and resonates with the intended audience, both locally and internationally. I am your dedicated partner in achieving clear and impactful scientific communication in Latin America.
